Much like Gaynor Telesystems did 40 years ago, many small businesses start out in a room in a home. There are many ways to be successful as a small start-up competing with larger, more established firms. One very important factor is professionalism. You might not be ready for office phone systems, however, best practices dictate you should not use your personal cell phone for your new business venture.
First you should obtain a new business telephone number and have it installed at your home. Will one number be enough? If so, then you can use a simple single line telephone with a voicemail box from your dial tone company.
Now a few months later you are experiencing great success and need more lines for your call traffic but are not ready to make that huge financial investment of moving out of the home into expensive commercial rental space. Can we install office phone systems in your home? There are a few things to consider, but the simple answer is YES.
One of the main things to consider is your home wiring.
Typically homes are not wired for office phone systems and are in fact wired in what is called ‘daisy chain’ fashion. This means that there are no ‘home runs’ from each jack back to the MPOE (minimum point of entry) where your phone lines enter your home. An office phone system requires dedicated or home runs, which we can provide. Be sure to discuss this with any provider you are getting a quote from.
You will also need to find a climate controlled room for the Central Processing Unit or KSU.
Some errors we have seen is for this unit to be installed in a garage that gets very hot and very cold. Your office phone system will not function well, or last very long in that type of environment. You don’t have that type of space or your spouse does not want it mounted in the laundry room? We can provide you with a hosted VOIP office phone system that will give you multiple lines and all the functionality of a premise-based system but without some of the upfront costs and no KSU in the laundry room (happy spouse!)
Be aware of cost differences
Another benefit of hosted VOIP office phone systems is that when you are ready to move out of your home to a commercial office space the costs to move the system will be less than a premise based system. Always be aware of the cost differences: Hosted VOIP is basically a rental plan and you pay every month for the equipment and service. You will never own it. Premised-Based office phone systems are yours and there are no ongoing monthly payments. You can, however, lease a premise-based system and have the best of both financial worlds: ownership without a huge capital cash outlay.
